Press for `Comics: Philosophy and Practice` Conference
Various publications applaud the Comics: Philosophy & Practice Conference which took place May 18th through 20th at the University of Chicago's new Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts. The conference brought together many of the most highly regarded comic book artists of our time with academics from the University for three days of lectures, panels and workshops. This weekend springs out of artist Alison Bechdel and University of Chicago Professor Hillary Chute's collaborative fellowship Lines of Transmission: Comics and Autobiography which probed the critical theory of comic books, and how it could be expanded.
While the conference lasted less than two days in total, there was enough fodder here to continue for a week.

The conference is kind of the culmination of an artistic and scholarly collaborationbetween cartoonist Alison Bechdel and U of C Professor Hillary Chute. So fittingly, it features a megawatt lineup of graphic artists: R. Crumb, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Chris Ware, Lynda Barry and of course Clowes.
"It feels historic," Bechdel said. "I realize how grandiose that might sound to someone who doesn't know much about comics, but that's the word that keeps coming to me. The whole thing just blows my mind."
